“All the gilt was 9 carat gold leaf. In Pearson Gregory’s time the room contained many beautiful paintings and all the furniture was gilt framed. There was a big round marble table with gilt edgings. It took two Italian painters two years, lying on their backs, to paint the ceiling. The furniture came from Italy and Holland.”
