As a result of her expensive activism against capital punishment, Mrs. Van der Elst could no longer afford her lavish lifestyle or her beloved Grantham Castle. Unfortunately, she was forced to sell the manor to the Society of Jesus, known as the Jesuits, in 1948 for £60,000.
