Van der Elst attempted to further her political cause by campaigning to become a candidate for Parliament. She stood as an Independent candidate for three elections. Despite her efforts, she was defeated by her competition each time at the primary level, but continued to plague Parliament with petitions regarding the injustices of capital punishment.
