Study abroad

Gregory Gregory travelled across England and Europe to gain inspiration for designing his home and to bring back art and furniture for its interior. Many of the objects he acquired were meant to display his wealth of both money and knowledge of other cultures. The Victorian elite had a fascination for the foreign and exotic peoples that Britain conquered, so while Gregory Gregory had many pieces from mainland Europe, he also included pieces that represented the Britain’s colonial conquests. Among the art and furniture he brought back to England, he also acquired plants such as a Giant Hogweed from Constantinople. In addition to travelling, Gregory also studied architecture from books, but often complained there were not enough books on the subjects on which he wanted to learn.
