Pearson Gregory’s Long Gallery

The Long Gallery, 1937

The Long Gallery, 1937

“The Long Gallery was used as a Library with one end as a sitting room. Tapestries used to hang on the walls of the Long Gallery. Mrs Thornton recalled how difficult is was to clean this room as the only tools they had were a handbrush and dustpan or a long brush. There was wall to wall carpeting in this room. The hidden door in the corner (now a fire escape) was never opened. Tapestries covering the walls made it impossible to open this door. Mrs. Thornton remarked that the fireplaces always looked lovely. The second housemaid had the job of polishing these and they always shone she did it so well.”

Mrs. Thornton’s recollections, Head Housemaid, 1928-1937
