Gregory Gregory’s Bio
Born 9 October 1786, Gregory Gregory was raised at Rempstone Hall in Leicestershire by his parents, Olivia Preston of Flasby Hall and William Gregory Williams. He was born Gregory Williams but changed his name to Gregory Gregory after inheriting multiple estates from his uncle. He was educated at the private Rugby School in Warwickshire. At age 19, in 1805, Gregory Gregory attended Christ Church College in Oxford where he studied classics, Greek philosophy, and mathematics, yet, as was the style for many young gentlemen of his time, he did not obtain his degree and left after two years. He then joined the local militia and became Major in the Second or Southwell Regiment, rising to Lieutenant Colonel in 1813. Gregory Gregory was also a fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society and the Zoological Society of London, and in 1825, following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, he became the Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. After moving into his newly constructed Harlaxton Manor in 1851, he died in 1854 before the home was officially completed in 1855.
